COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : ACROSS THE NATION : Officials’ Calls Anger Luginbill
San Diego State Coach Al Luginbill ripped Western Athletic Conference officials for making “incompetent” calls in the Aztecs’ 20-17 loss to Air Force on Saturday night.
“I think it’s an absolute shame that we cannot get people to be competent enough in the officiating area to make the obvious correct calls,” Luginbill said.
Luginbill was most upset with a reversed call on an apparent Air Force fumble at the Aztec three in the third quarter with San Diego State leading, 14-12.
Obasi Onuoha dropped the ball while going around left end. After sending the Aztec defense off the field, officials ruled that Onuoha was down before he fumbled. He scored the go-ahead touchdown two plays later.
Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese said Syracuse quarterback Marvin Graves should have been ejected after a bench-clearing brawl with West Virginia on Oct. 17.
However, the league didn’t announce any disciplinary action against the officials, and Syracuse’s 20-17 victory stands.
The fight started after West Virginia defensive back Tommy Orr knocked Graves out of bounds and Graves threw the ball at him. Three of West Virginia’s key defensive players and one Syracuse reserve were thrown out. Graves threw the winning touchdown pass against a reserve defensive back who replaced an ejected player.
Doctors in Seattle repaired the broken cheekbone of Don James, University of Washington coach. The broken pieces of cheekbone were pushed back into position and did not require wiring to keep them in place.
James, who is expected back at work today, was injured Oct. 17 when hit by an Oregon linebacker trying to tackle the Huskies’ Napoleon Kaufman.
