GARDEN GROVE — The weather dampened Garden Grove High’s homecoming Friday night, but the rain and lightning failed to deter Jim Sebreros.
Sebreros scored three touchdowns in the first 6 minutes 34 seconds to help the Argonauts defeat Santiago, 28-0, in a Garden Grove League game at Garden Grove High.
On the opening kickoff, Sebreros shook off a tackle, found an opening and ran 85 yards to give Garden Grove a 7-0 lead. It was the first time the senior running back has scored on a kickoff return.
“I always wanted to run (a kickoff) back for a touchdown,” said Sebreros, who rushed for 90 yards in 12 carries.
Garden Grove improved to 5-1, 3-1 in league. Santiago is 1-6, 1-3.
With 9:03 left in the first quarter, Sebreros turned the first play from scrimmage on Garden Grove’s second possession into a 52-yard touchdown run.
Three plays after the ensuing kick, Dan Rodarte recovered a fumble by Santiago quarterback Louie Perez at the Santiago 19. Three plays later, Sebreros scored from the five with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter.
Sebreros praised his offensive line of Rodarte, John Dear and Joe Reynolds for their blocking, especially during a first-half downpour. Roy Mendoza scored Garden Grove’s other touchdown on a 49-yard kickoff return with 9:49 left in the fourth quarter.
