Yehudit Horowitz; Last Survivor of Jewish Militia
Yehudit Horowitz, 96, believed to be the last survivor of the Hashomer militia, the first armed Jewish movement in Palestine. Hashomer (Watchman) was founded in 1909. Although it never had more than a few hundred members, it was the first Jewish movement in Palestine to adopt a policy of self-protection rather than reliance on hired security, and it provided the ideological and structural basis for battling Arab resistance to Jewish settlement. In 1920 Hashomer was replaced by the more widely based Haganah armed movement, which developed into today’s Israeli army. In Jerusalem on Wednesday.
