COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Extends Winning Streak in Water Polo to 7
Steve Gill, Marc Hunt and Mark Stevenson each scored two goals as UC Irvine beat Pepperdine, 9-4, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match Saturday at Heritage Park in Irvine.
It was the seventh consecutive victory for Irvine (10-6, 6-1 in conference), which is ranked fifth in the nation. Pepperdine (10-6, 4-1) is ranked fourth. Irvine led, 4-3, at the half but outscored Pepperdine, 3-0, in the third quarter to pull away.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
UC Irvine 2, Biola 0--Michael Succi and Scott Smith scored for UC Irvine (5-8).
In nonconference women’s soccer:
UC Irvine 6, Biola 0--Amy Chapman needed only one save to post her third consecutive shutout and seventh of the season for the Anteaters (7-6-2).
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, CS Fullerton 0--Popi Edwards had 13 kills to lead host UC Irvine (10-9, 4-7), which won, 15-8, 15-5, 15-7. The Titans are 0-15 and 0-9.
In the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo cross-country invitational:
Titan women defeat UCI--Heather Killeen and Kristin Peters finished third and fourth, running the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes 23 seconds and 17:24, respectively, to lead the unranked Titans to a fifth-place finish, ahead of 21st-ranked UC Irvine. Traci Goodrich, the Anteaters’ first finisher, was 14th with a time of 18:01.
Fullerton finished fifth and Irvine sixth in the men’s race. Fullerton’s Steve Frisone finished third in 24:45 for five miles.
