Brethren Christian Ends Drought Against Whittier Christian

LAKEWOOD —  Brethren Christian ended a five-year drought against Whittier Christian Friday night with a 12-7 victory in an Olympic League game at Artesia High School.

The Warriors (4-2) had not beaten Whittier Christian since 1987. But tight defense and a determined rush gave Brethren Christian the edge it needed.

Five plays into the first quarter, quarterback Reggie Davis ran 29 yards through the Herald defense for a touchdown. The two-point attempt was stopped.

On its third possession, Whittier Christian converted a fourth-and-one situation into a score, as Aaron Meschuk outran the defense for a 71-yard touchdown. Meschuk led the Heralds with 143 yards in 23 carries.

The Warriors’ Scott Thomas intercepted a Chad Callahan pass in the second quarter on Brethren’s 48-yard line and ran to the Whittier Christian 28, which set up Davis’ second touchdown run from two yards out. Thomas, who played every down, caught three passes for 45 yards.

Despite having an apparent touchdown called back and amassing 40 penalty yards, Brethren limited the Heralds (3-3) to 63 yards of offense in the second half.
