Corona del Mar, Woodbridge Settle for Tie

NEWPORT BEACH — Corona del Mar put on a show for a homecoming crowd of 3,300, but had to settle for a 27-27 tie with Woodbridge in a Sea View League game Friday night.
After an early Warrior touchdown, Sea King fullback J.R. Walz returned the ensuing kickoff a school-record 95 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7. The Sea Kings (4-1-1, 1-1-1) scored on their next two possessions before Woodbridge narrowed the gap to 17-14 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Corona del Mar recovered a Warrior fumble, and Tom Hess scored on a 22-yard run to give the Sea Kings a 24-14 lead.
The Warriors (1-4-1, 0-2-1) answered with a 17-play scoring drive, then scored again after a 16-yard Corona del Mar punt. Gary Young carried three consecutive times, the final a 15-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors a 27-24 lead. The junior finished with 134 yards in 18 carries.
The Sea Kings scored again when Tanner Rupp capped a 10-play drive with a 27-yard field goal that knotted the score with 58 seconds left. The teams traded desperation passes in the final minute, but had to settle for the tie.
