6 Elected Lawmakers to Join Kuwait Cabinet
KUWAIT — Six elected members of Parliament will join Kuwait’s Cabinet, the largest number ever to do so, under a plan agreed to by the crown prince and parliamentary deputies, the official Kuwait News Agency said Wednesday.
Quoting a parliamentary source, the agency said the deputies have requested eight ministries but accepted six after talks with Crown Prince Sheik Saad al Abdullah al Sabah, reappointed Monday by the emir as prime minister.
Diplomats said six seats were within expectations considering the opposition’s sweep in the Oct. 5 elections, the first since Kuwait was freed from Iraqi occupation by the U.S.-led allies last year. The opposition, a loose alliance of several groups, won 31 of 50 parliamentary seats.
The Parliament will convene next Tuesday.
Press reports said the emir, Sheik Jabbar al Ahmed al Sabah, will probably announce the new Cabinet on Saturday.
