SAN DIEGO : Capsized Boat Is Just a Stripped Hull
A partially sunken boat found Tuesday several miles off Sunset Cliffs turned out to be a craft someone had stripped, towed out and abandoned, officials said.
People on another boat reported seeing a capsized boat at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday 3 1/2 miles from the Mission Bay channel, slowly drifting past Ocean Beach, a San Diego lifeguard spokesman said. Lifeguards and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and boat searched the ocean 3 miles from the channel, finding only the waterlogged 26-foot craft near Sunset Cliffs.
There were no reports of missing persons and the boat was “basically a stripped hull,” Lifeguard Lt. Charlie Wright said.
The boat was stripped of batteries, all electrical equipment and was a low-slung craft commonly used for calm, fresh-water recreation, Wright said.
