Series on Addicts and AIDS

The four-part series, “In the Shooting Gallery: Addicts and AIDS” (Sept. 27-30), provided an important perspective for these times, particularly in Los Angeles’ large urban setting. I do not think it is melodramatic to say that the problems facing this society are so overwhelming and complex that it is mind-boggling to even begin thinking about them.
While I certainly do not believe that the answers lie in coddling those who have “dropped out” of society, no solutions will present themselves without more of a recognition and understanding (not to be confused, necessarily, with approval) of all those who make up this nation of people. The disenfranchised need a voice, and this society needs more “wake-up calls,” like the one provided by this series, in order to begin to move toward those solutions.
