Bakersfield 40, Ventura 6--Bakersfield dominated Ventura in a Western State Conference opener at Ventura High.
Bakersfield (2-0), ranked eighth in the state, went 65 yards on its opening drive, scoring on a one-yard run by Reggie Williams.
Halfback Angus Sumlin added touchdown runs of four and 41 yards on Bakersfield’s next two possessions and the Renegades had a 20-0 lead after one quarter. Sumlin had 102 yards in 10 first-quarter rushes.
Stacy Townsend started at quarterback for Ventura (0-2) but lasted only two plays before sustaining a leg injury. Charles Hicks replaced him. Ventura fumbled seven times, mostly on exchanges in its veer offense, but lost the ball only once.
Ventura finally scored with 19 seconds to play on a five-yard run by Hicks.
