SOUTH ROUNDUP : Memphis State Wins Amid Turmoil
Cornerback Ken Irvin tied a national record with three blocked punts as the Tigers put troubles from the past several days behind them and beat Arkansas, 22-6, Saturday at Memphis, Tenn., for their first victory of the season.
The victory came four days after 80 Memphis State players refused to practice in protest against Coach Chuck Stobart. There were no signs of dissension Saturday.
The three blocks by Irvin, a sophomore from Lindale, Ga., tied a mark set in 1942 by Tom Moorhead of Indiana against Kansas. Memphis State officials were reviewing another punt that appeared to be partially blocked to see if Irvin got a piece of that, which would give him the record.
Irvin’s first two blocks set up a pair of field goals by Joe Allison, the first a 51-yarder with 5:23 left in the first quarter and the second from 21 yards with six minutes left in the half. A third block by Irvin in the third quarter set up a 43-yard kick by Allison.
The Tigers’ two touchdowns came on a pair of one-yard runs by fullback Marcus Holliday.
Both teams are 1-3.
Georgia Tech 20, No. 16 Clemson 16--Shawn Jones completed 21 of 34 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns at Atlanta as the Yellow Jackets scored the upset and their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season.
Jones hit Keenan Walker with a one-yard scoring toss to start the game and later clinched the victory with a 36-yard pass to Bobby Rodriguez in the third quarter. Scott Sisson added field goals of 50 and 29 yards for Georgia Tech, 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
Clemson (1-2, 0-2) got its touchdown on a seven-yard draw play by Richard Moncrief late in the third quarter. Nelson Welch added field goals of 52, 25 and 32 yards.
Georgia Tech’s defense smothered Clemson’s offense. Moncrief completed only six of 22 passes for 82 yards and Clemson got 147 yards from its tailbacks.
No. 14 Virginia 55, Duke 28--Bobby Goodman scored on a short run and added two touchdown passes and Terry Kirby rushed for a career-high 207 yards in the ACC victory at Durham, N.C.
The Cavaliers (4-0, 3-0) continued their offensive domination of the Blue Devils (1-3, 0-2), averaging 49 points in the last four meetings. All have been Virginia victories.
It was the third game in a row that the Cavaliers have scored at least 50 points, the second time in school history that has been done. They also had three 50-point games in 1990, the year Virginia rose to No. 1 in the polls.
Wyoming 26, Louisville 24--Joe Hughes passed for two touchdowns and Wyoming’s defense shut down a final Cardinal drive as the Cowboys (2-2) rallied for the win at Louisville, Ky.
Hughes’ 19-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Yarborough at the start of the fourth quarter put Wyoming up 26-17.
Jeff Brohm’s 11-yard pass to Kevin Cook made it 26-24 before Wyoming stopped the Cardinals (1-3) on first and goal with less than a minute left.
Bowling Green 44, East Carolina 34--Zeb Jackson scored on two one-yard runs and Bowling Green overcame Michael Anderson’s 379-yard passing performance with three interceptions at Bowling Green, Ohio.
Each team is 2-2.
