HAIL NORTH HOLLYWOOD

I knew Susan Sontag as a student at North Hollywood High (“Susan Sontag Lightens Up,” Aug. 16). I doubt, though, that she remembers me--a lowly girls’ physical education instructor--since she spent most of her time avoiding physical exercise. I went on to teach academic subjects and counseling and become a vice principal in the Los Angeles school system.
She was a supercilious student, and it seems that she hasn’t changed. North Hollywood was academically good then. Many of the students’ families were movie industry professionals; others were talented musicians. The music department put on quite professional concerts, seasonal programs and musicals.
According to Sontag, the English teachers were not up to her standards, but it’s hard to make valid judgments when you’re busy looking down your nose and sneering.
