Housing Plan Has Benefits
As a resident of Hidden Hills, and an active horseman, I have enjoyed a neighborly relationship with the Ahmanson Land Co. as the master plan for a new community on the Ahmanson Ranch has evolved over the past few years.
The Ahmanson Ranch Specific Plan, which I have studied in detail, demonstrates greater concern for the environment and natural resources than any other development proposal in this region. It is with dismay that I saw your very negative, sensationalist headlines that announced the availability of the draft environmental impact report on the project.
As a former journalist I would have preferred to see some balance in your coverage. While it is true that there are adverse effects as a result of the proposed new community, there are many benefits outlined in the EIR, which I believe clearly outweigh the negatives:
* 10,000 acres of permanently protected parkland.
* Strategically important land enabling the linkage of wildlife corridors as well as the regional trail network.
* Unprecedented planning for oak tree and native grass restoration.
* Establishment of the Las Virgenes Institute for Natural Resource Preservation and Restoration to oversee environmental programs.
I was also displeased with the prominence given the grandstanding by L.A. Councilwoman Joy (“Foot in the Street”) Picus and her hypocritical NIMBY politics.
