DOWNTOWN : Trial Run Approved for Electric Trolley
Commuters may hop on electric trolley buses at Broadway and 1st Street by the end of next year, now that plans and funds for a Rapid Transit District pilot program have been approved.
The 30/31 bus line, which runs from Pico through Downtown and Little Tokyo to East Los Angeles, and a second route in Long Beach were chosen for an experimental plan to eventually convert diesel-fueled buses on 12 lines throughout Los Angeles County to cleaner-air electric trolleys.
The RTD board and the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission recently approved the demonstration program. The commission agreed in August to set aside $50 million in public transportation funds for the lines.
The district plans to begin installing the poles and overhead wires in six to nine months, said Albert Perdon, RTD transit systems development director. The lines should be running by December, 1993, or early 1994, he said.
