Hilburn’s Hall

Shame on Hilburn for dismissing the Grateful Dead as unworthy of his A list. To reason that they be given consideration only because of the great following they have is ridiculous.
Jerry Garcia is one of the most fabulous guitar players around. His melodic playing, with jazz and blues influences, cannot be found in another--anywhere. Time magazine called Mickey Hart the best drummer in the world. Lyrically speaking, Dead songs evoke everything other nominees’ songs have, if not more.
While Deadheads do make “a strong case for the band’s induction,” as Hilburn writes, the music and lyrics of the Grateful Dead make a stronger one.
