SANTA CLARITA : Funds Pledged to Community College

A campaign to create critically needed classrooms at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita--one of California’s fastest-growing community colleges--has received pledges of funding from the Newhall Rotary Club and the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation, the college announced Thursday.

Newhall Rotary pledged to raise $15,000 over two years toward equipping and furnishing classrooms, while the Newhall Foundation has donated $20,000 toward its two-year pledge of $40,000, said Sue Bozman, the college’s spokeswoman.

The college’s Board of Trustees had voted to recognize individual and group sponsors by dedicating classrooms in their honor, for which they provide funding, she said.

The project is part of a five-year building program at the 6,000-student college, where classes filled so fast this semester that more than 1,200 students were turned away and another 3,500 were placed on waiting lists.
