Here are the four candidates vying for two seats on the board of the Magnolia School District in the Nov. 3 election. Barbara J. Clendineng
Age: 44.
Occupation: Incumbent.
Background: Elected to the board in 1988; currently serving as board president.
Priorities: Prioritize spending so that scarce state funds will go further; preserve those programs that achieve academic excellence; provide leadership in educational times.
Ruth W. Good
Age: 62.
Occupation: Incumbent, pianist.
Background: A school board member since 1987.
Priorities: Opposes any program cuts that affect children; proposes that teachers be schooled in the latest instructional techniques.
Janel Hangartner
Age: 55.
Occupation: Income tax consultant.
Background: Widow of John Hangartner, longtime football coach at John F. Kennedy High School.
Priorities: Advocates reduction in number of students per class; opposes voucher system, which would divert tax money to private schools; advocates expansion of after-school, day-care programs.
Steven Staveley
Age: 48.
Occupation: La Habra police chief.
Background: Served on the school board, 1980-87; member of the Anaheim Community Services board.
Priorities: Proposes reducing class size to meet the needs of both English- and non-English-speaking students; opposes the district’s deficit spending; would promote teachers to their students as heroes.
