ANAHEIM — Fasi Tuipelehake sacked David Martin in the final two seconds to help Western defeat Cypress, 19-14, Friday at Western High.
On fourth and one, Brandon Brennan completed a 25-yard pass to Josh Christensen with 2 minutes 8 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give Western (2-0) the lead, 19-14. Brennan, who completed 11 of 22 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns, failed to complete the conversion pass to Jason Covarrubias.
Brennan’s other touchdown was a 20-yard pass to Jason Diaz that gave Western a 7-0 lead with 6:18 left in the second quarter.
Cypress returned the ensuing punt to its 29-yard line, then Martin completed five of his next eight attempts to move the ball to the Western 43. Following a pass-interference call against Western that moved the ball to the 27, Martin threw two incomplete passes before Tuipelehake’s sack.
For Cypress (0-2), Martin and Joey Meza intercepted Brennan twice and Martin Guillory blocked a conversion kick by Covarrubias in the final 17 seconds of the second quarter.
The Centurions gained 160 total yards in total offense. Western gained 241 total yards.
