Former Los Angeles Dodger Derrel Thomas and an ex-sheriff’s deputy have been indicted on cocaine trafficking charges, a defense atorney said Friday.
Thomas, 41, of Redondo Beach, and former deputy Rickey Ross, 43, of Rialto, are charged with conspiring to sell and buy cocaine and possessing $140,000 to spend on the drug, according to Ross’sattorney, Rowan Klein.
The county grand jury indictment was returned Thursday but will not be unsealed until Ross and Thomas are arraigned next week, Klein said. Ross is free on $100,000 bail. Thomas, who followed his playing career by coaching at Dorsey High School, is free on $50,000 bail.
San Fernando police and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested the two men April 24 after an undercover agent offered to sell 22 pounds of cocaine, the DEA said.
Ross was fired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 1989 for drug and alcohol use and misuse of drug evidence, officials said.
