The first public gymnasium and largest community center in Simi Valley has received final approval from the Simi Valley Planning Commission.
The commission on Wednesday approved Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District’s proposal to build a 26,800-square-foot gymnasium and community center at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park.
The $3-million building will be at the south end of the 46-acre park, which is at Los Angeles Avenue and Stearns Street. Park district officials will solicit construction bids within the next two months and expect the building to be completed by late summer 1994, said Dmitri Hunt, the district’s planning and development administrator.
The district now uses gymnasiums at local schools for events such as league basketball games and clinics.
The new gym will have regulation-size floors, with two full courts and one tournament court, he said.
Adjoining the gym will be a community center with recreation rooms for arts-and-crafts workshops and other classes, and a dance studio with bars and mirrors.
The facility will also include the largest meeting room in the city, with seating for about 200 people.
