Manny Tafoya
School: Mayfair High
Sport: Football
Position: Running Back
Class: Senior
Tafoya had 17 carries for 211 yards, one of the top rushing performances in the school’s history. He scored two touchdowns on runs of 25 and 55 yards as the Monsoons won their season opener, 28-15, over La Serna. “Manny ran hard and the line did a great job of opening big holes,” Coach Larry Hilliard said.
Other top performers:
Derek Brown, the Mayfair quarterback, completed 14 of 17 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Brown’s first pass of the 1992 season was an 80-yard bomb to wide receiver Jamar Nailor for a touchdown.
Joe Nuez, a running back for the Lakewood High Lancers, carried the ball 18 times and gained 172 yards, including touchdown runs of one yard and 65 yards. The two touchdowns helped lead the Lancers to a 20-13 victory over Warren.
