BURBANK : L. A. Presses Fight Over Airport Noise

The Los Angeles City Council moved on two fronts Tuesday to continue its years-long fight with the Burbank Airport over noise.
By a unanimous vote, the council approved documents that challenge the adequacy of a preliminary environmental review of plans to expand the airport. The expansion would nearly double its capacity from 3 million passengers per year to 5.4 million.
The documents approved Tuesday contain the city’s official comments on the report that outlines potential environmental impacts from the expansion.
Councilman Joel Wachs, who co-authored the motion urging the city to comment on the environmental report, has said the draft of the report grossly understates the noise impacts of the expansion.
“In fact, this project would mean a huge increase in flights and passengers and a lot more noise,” Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky added. Wachs and Yaroslavsky represent neighborhoods affected by airport noise.
