City Council Candidates
The following candidates are vying for two seats on the Buena Park City Council on Nov. 3.
Donald L. Bone
Age: 49
Occupation: Incumbent and former mayor; painting contractor
Background: Seeking second City Council term; founding member of the Child Abuse Prevention Center; former trustee, Fullerton Joint Union High School Board; founding president, Buena Park High School Aqua Boosters; works with Corazon organization to build houses in Mexico for needy families.
Issues: Favors increasing user fees and delaying capital improvement projects until the budget stabilizes; opposes staff cutbacks in police and fire departments; favors term limits if approved by voters.
John Dade
Age: 40
Occupation: Realtor
Background: Served on the board of the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce and chaired the city’s Fine Arts Commission. Served on the Citizens Advisory Committee.
Issues: Favors business incentives to increase revenue to the city; opposes further staff cutbacks unless it saves Police and Fire Department layoffs; favors terms limits.
Don R. Griffin
Age: 61
Occupation: Incumbent and former mayor; architect and planner
Background: Eighteen years on the council; former joint chairman, Orange County Sanitation District; former president, Buena Park Chamber of Commerce.
Issues: Favors further budget tightening rather than raising fees or taxes to balance the budget; opposes further cuts in recreational programs that appeal to youth; opposes formal term limits.
Charles L. Menzies
Age: 20
Occupation: College student
Background: Worked on political campaigns of Michael Dukakis, Rick Thierbach, now working on campaign for Bill Clinton; former two-term Youth in Government leader from north Orange County.
Issues: Favors raising taxes to increase revenue instead of dipping into reserves or laying off employees; favors more intensive lobbying in Sacramento to reduce the amount of local money going to the state; favors term limits.
