The Keebler Co. said it plans to close its bakery in Van Nuys on Nov. 12, eliminating 106 jobs.

Keebler, based in Elmhurst, Ill., said it would shift production of snack crackers from Van Nuys to some of its nine other plants in the United States. Keebler said it was closing the 130,500-square-foot facility at 8257 Woodley Ave. because of its size, location and inability to expand its product mix.

“The Van Nuys plant has been one of the least cost-efficient to operate,” the company said in a release.

Keebler bought the Van Nuys plant from Safeway in 1982 as part of its expansion to the West Coast. But in March, 1991, the company laid off 150 workers and shifted most of its production to other plants. Keebler said it will maintain five distribution centers in California, where about 350 people work.
