Ayrton Senna won the Italian Grand Prix...
Ayrton Senna won the Italian Grand Prix by taking advantage of a dismal performance by the dominant Williams-Renault team at Monza, Italy.
Senna drove his McLaren-Honda car into the lead with five laps to go and went on to the 36th victory of his career and the third this season.
Senna trailed Williams-Renault’s duo of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese for most of the race, but took control when both experienced hydraulic failure. He finished 53 laps in 1 hour 18 minutes 15.349 seconds.
Before the race, Mansell announced he will withdraw from Formula One at the end of this season after failing to reach a contract extension agreement with the Williams team. Mansell said he is considering joining the Indy-car series next season.
Britain’s Martin Brundle was second, 17.05 seconds behind Senna.
