WEEKEND TV : ‘Report’ Grades Schools

With many students already in school, the rest about to start the fall semester and education at the forefront of parents’ minds, “The Brokaw Report” presents “America’s Schools--Pass or Fail?” tonight at 10 on NBC (4)(36)(39).

The show focuses on three problems: children beginning school unprepared, even hungry; the sprawling educational bureaucracies that dictate curriculum, tests and procedures, and where America will find the graduates it needs for an increasingly complex and competitive work force.

Tom Brokaw also talks with three high-profile education experts: Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander, Philadelphia School Superintendent Dr. Constance Clayton and Dr. Chester Finn, a member of the Edison Project, the proposed system of pay-to-learn schools.
