Candidate George Bush
How pleasurable to hear Tom Bethell (Column Right, Aug. 10) concede the Republicans’ defeat this early in the campaign. Like most ideologues he retreats happily to the moral high ground stating that “conservatives will revive (the GOP) with a Democrat in the White House, as they did under Jimmy Carter.”
Well, what happened? The GOP had 12 years to get it right after Carter. They failed. Are we expected to get excited in ’96 by the prospect of another 12 years of decay? Maybe Bethell and the conservative caucus should go back and examine what the Republicans accomplished during their last recess from power before creating another Reaganstein.
