Top-seeded Monica Seles overpowered sluggish No. 3-seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 6-3, 6-2, on Saturday to advance to the final of the $350,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles tournament.
In today’s final, Seles will meet the winner of Saturday’s other semifinal match between No. 2 Martina Navratilova and No. 4 Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Switzerland.
Sanchez Vicario, who won a bronze medal in the singles and a silver in the doubles playing for Spain in the Olympics, committed 42 unforced errors to 15 for Seles.
“It was too close to the Olympics,” Sanchez Vicario said, complaining of lingering jet lag.
Sanchez Vicario left Barcelona last Sunday and played her first match at the Manhattan Country Club on Wednesday.
“This is probably the worst time zone I’ve been through,” she said. “It’s very tough but I’m glad I came anyway.”
Sanchez Vicario led, 15-40, in the sixth game of the second set, but committed three backhand errors to lose the advantage. Seles went on to win that game and the next two.
“That game in the second set, that was very important,” Seles said.
Both players played below par, Seles said.
“We were making errors we don’t usually make from both ends,” she said. “My groundstrokes were not going well and I don’t think I hit one winner on my second serve. I just didn’t feel comfortable out there.”
Sanchez Vicario has lost each of the 10 matches she has played against Seles.
“I just didn’t win my serve as much as I should have,” she said. “I think I was waiting too long to hit the ball.”
