Stomach Surgery to Force Thief to Return Gold Chain

LISBON, Portugal — A surgeon’s knife awaits a Portuguese thief after three days of laxatives failed to shift a stolen gold chain from his stomach, the newspaper Publico reported Friday. Police caught the 28-year-old man in the act of snatching the necklace from a woman but were not quick enough to prevent him from swallowing the evidence. Doctors say there is now no alternative but to open up his belly to retrieve the necklace, which was visible on X-rays.
