* * * * Clare Fischer, “Memento,” Discovery. This compilation, taken from three recording sessions, reveals the admirable breadth of which this acclaimed pianist-composer is capable. Four cuts wedge Fischer’s keyboards in and among a gloriously understated woodwind choir, while seven tracks, among these a memorable “Giant Steps,” find Fischer overdubbing keyboard parts to create orchestral-like moods. The artist’s improvisations range between the finger-popping and the cerebrally angular.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
