Of all the stellar players on the field for the 27th annual West Torrance Lions All-Star Football Game, Theron Hill shone brightest.
The speedy Carson High tailback scored two touchdowns and gained 192 total yards to lead the East to a 22-6 victory over the West Thursday night at El Camino College.
Hill provided most of the excitement for the 2,750 fans, rushing for 123 yards and catching two passes, including one that went for a 69-yard touchdown. And if it weren’t for an early fumble near the goal line, he would have enjoyed an even bigger game.
Hill spent most of the second half on the sideline stretching a sore right hamstring. Although he said later he was not injured, Hill returned for only one fourth-quarter play, a run for one yard.
“I was looking for a nice way to end my high school career and I think I found it,” said Hill, who leaves next week to attend the University of Washington.
“But to be honest, it was an OK performance. Average. I felt a little cautious because I didn’t want to risk any nicks and bruises and chance falling behind when I got up there.”
The game was interrupted midway through the first quarter when a brawl involving about 100 spectators spread through the east stands.
The fight lasted several minutes before Torrance police, campus security and other uniformed personnel restored order. A helicopter arrived shortly before halftime, preceding a contingent of two dozen riot-gear clad Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who filed into the stadium during intermission. There were no further incidents inside the stadium.
On the field, the East shook off a sluggish start to grab a 15-6 halftime lead.
After miscues stopped two earlier drives, the East used a fumble recovery by Carson’s Eran Taulva to set up its first touchdown.
On the series, Hill gained 15 yards, then appeared headed for a score until West defender Victor Glusac jarred the ball from him near the 2. But Carson’s Tony Knox fell on it in the end zone for the East touchdown.
Trailing, 7-0, the West closed the gap with a 13-play, 67-yard drive capped off by Mira Costa quarterback Greg Gilmore’s 21-yard scoring pass to Hawthorne’s John Garrett. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
With 30 seconds remaining before halftime, Hill and Gardena quarterback Larry Roberts hooked up again, this time on a 69-yard touchdown that gave the East a 15-6 halftime advantage.
Hill finished off the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown run early in the second half.
Even without Hill, the East was dominant with its rushing attack, gaining 116 yards to only 50 for the West. The East defense was responsible for three sacks and held Gilmore to eight of 17 passing.
Jesse Swayze of Morningside was the game’s second-leading rusher with 54 yards and Roberts accounted for 32 yards. Roberts completed five of 15 passes for 99 yards, but also lost two fumbles.
