Two people accused in the June 6 shooting of Sheriff’s Deputy Paul E. Kain pleaded not guilty Monday, and Superior Court Judge William D. Mudd set an Oct. 19 trial date.

James Michael Bright, 26, of San Diego is charged with attempted murder in the shooting, which has left Kain with a partly paralyzed leg. Kain was hit three times after stopping a car reportedly driven by Bright on Palm Street in Lemon Grove.

Heather Anne McVey, 23, of Lakeside is charged with being an accessory to the crime because she allegedly harbored Bright and helped him change his appearance, even though she knew he was wanted by authorities.

In a closed hearing Monday, the judge denied McVey’s request to replace her court-appointed attorney, Ray Thielen.

Bright is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, and McVey remains in custody because she has not been able to post $10,000 bail.
