ANTAEUS: NOT FOR BREAD ALONE: Writers on Food, Wine and the Art of Eating Edited by Daniel Halpern (Ecco Press: $15). Issue No. 68 of the semiannual journal Antaeus is devoted to articles on various aspects of gustatory pleasure. In the most compelling piece in the collection, Wendell Berry discusses the need for a rational approach to eating in America: “Like industrial sex, industrial eating has become a degraded, poor, and paltry thing. Alice Waters recounts the ongoing problems of finding suitable ingredients for her restaurant, Chez Panisse, in an agreeable memoir. Entertaining reading for summer days when it’s too hot to cook.
