Jobless Claims Take Biggest Jump in Months: The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose sharply in early July, the government said, dampening hope for anything more than minimal improvement in the unemployment rate this month. The Labor Department said initial jobless claims for the week ending July 11 hit 422,000, up from 403,000 the week before. It was the biggest rise since late February and the level of claims was the highest since the week ending May 2.
