A 21-year-old prisoner charged with transporting narcotics escaped from the County Jail downtown Wednesday by walking out an unlocked side door in the lobby, a jail official said.
Jesus Paez was one of four jail trustees who were cleaning the lobby in the early morning. A deputy left for a moment, and Paez walked out an unlocked door about 4:35 a.m., Lt. Charles Uno said.
Paez was wearing khaki-colored jail clothes, Uno said. Police searched downtown San Diego but could not find Paez, Uno said.
