America West Denies Plans to Cut Service to Hawaii
PHOENIX — America West Airlines has no plans to eliminate flights to Hawaii as it studies ways to lower costs, the carrier’s president said Tuesday.
Mike Conway, also chief executive, said America West was studying the possible elimination of Boeing 747 leases, but that other planes would be used for the Hawaii service in such an event.
Conway’s announcement came after comments Monday by America West’s founder and former chairman that the carrier was considering ceasing flights to Hawaii.
Edward R. Beauvais, who announced his resignation Friday, also said on Phoenix radio station KTAR that America West may cut 1,000 to 2,000 jobs, something Conway didn’t mention.
Beauvais cited the airline’s financial health as the reason for his resignation.
“I chose to improve the opportunities for a successful reorganization for America West by sacrificing and making the decision to resign,” he said. “This company needs to survive. It’s more important than I am.”
Cutbacks expected to be revealed this week could include reducing the number of planes to 87 from 102, the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Gazette reported Tuesday, citing unidentified sources.
