LA CRESCENTA : Fireworks Show Fizzles With No One to Run It

For thousands of people who turned out for a community fireworks show, the Fourth of July was a real dud.

The professional fireworks operator failed to show up for Saturday night’s show at Crescenta Valley High School football stadium, leaving the crowd of 5,000 with nothing more to look at than moonlight. Organizers tried to improvise, asking over the loudspeaker, “Is there a pyrotechnician in the house?”

There wasn’t.

“We were so embarrassed,” said Lou Fram, a member of the La Crescenta Chamber of Commerce, which organized the show. “I was walking around the football field and I was just crying.”

Chamber officials were trying to figure out how to handle refunds for the $5 tickets, a troublesome task since ticket stubs were taken at the door. The fireworks company, meanwhile, was investigating what went wrong.
