Britain’s two-time decathlon gold medal winner Daley Thompson, the world record-holder in the event who hasn’t qualified for Barcelona, pulled out of a meet at Trondheim, Norway. This had been billed as his last chance to qualify.
However, Thompson blamed the rain for his problems and vowed to try again, perhaps in a special meet set up for him. “Don’t write me off yet,” he said.
Last week, British track officials broke their own rules to give Thompson until July 10 to achieve the 7,850 points needed to qualify. He reportedly decided to try because he thought he might win a medal after Dan O’Brien, the favorite, failed to qualify.
