The gavel changed hands Tuesday when Councilwoman Gwen Forsythe was unanimously selected as the city’s new mayor.
Forsythe, who is in the third year of her first four-year term on the council, took Frank Laszlo’s place as head of the five-member council. Marilyn Bruce Hastings was selected mayor pro tem.
Forsythe said the most pressing issue for Seal Beach during her term as mayor will be the budget. The city expects to end the fiscal year June 30 without going into the red, and Forsythe said she wants to make sure that cuts that may be necessary in the future will not adversely affect Seal Beach residents.
Also on Tuesday, Councilman William J. Doane was sworn in to complete the two years remaining on the term of the late Councilman Joe Hunt, and George Brown, who fills the seat vacated by Edna Wilson, was sworn in to begin a four-year term.
Laszlo began his fifth council term on Tuesday.
