NORTH HOLLYWOOD : 5 Students Are Headed for Moscow
Five students from Walter Reed Junior High School in North Hollywood are headed for Moscow after winning a competition that tested their knowledge of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
The youths formed one of the top five teams last week in the Ambassadors to Europe competition developed by the Los Angeles Times in Education program in conjunction with Lufthansa German Airlines. The contest was designed to promote knowledge of the new Commonwealth of Independent States and former Soviet bloc countries.
Twelve teams from around Southern California were chosen as finalists for last week’s competition, based on their team-written essays on “Moscow and Eastern Europe in the ‘90s.” In the final round, students answered oral questions based on Los Angeles Times articles published since March.
The Walter Reed team includes students Jennifer Godwin, David Javier, Melinda Kirsch, Eli Lehrer and Sarah Pearlman, and coach Paul W. Mertens. They and 24 others will take a nine-day tour of Moscow beginning June 2.
