Chip Barometer Jumps: Strong growth in semiconductor orders sent the industry’s key indicator surging in April, the San Jose-based Semiconductor Industry Assn. said. The book to bill ratio--or ratio of orders to shipments--jumped from 1.07 in March to 1.10. Bookings rose 4.8% in April to $1.57 billion from March’s $1.5 billion. Billings rose 2.1% to $1.43 billion from $1.40 billion.
