Marching to the Library: A collection of John Philip Sousa’s manuscripts and papers, stored for decades at a high school in Illinois, is finding its way to the Library of Congress, courtesy of a dedicated school district music dean. The district bought the works in the 1940s from Victor Grabel, a Chicago band leader and friend of Sousa, and the papers remained in a high school storeroom until the district’s dean of visual and performing arts began cataloguing them in 1967. The collection includes many published materials dating back to the 1890s and several manuscripts in Sousa’s own hand. The donation is being made to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sousa’s legendary marching band.
