The Execution of Harris

Just about the time I felt The Times and I would never agree on a political or legal issue, your article (“Cruel, Unusual Last-Ditch Acts in Harris Case,” Column Right, April 23) by Ken S. Scheidegger comes along. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals certainly did act like a circus court instead of a circuit court in the Harris case. Let’s face it, any discussion of cruel and unusual punishment should involve the two young victims’ fate--first and foremost. Any decision as to whether the current method of execution used by California is cruel and unusual punishment will almost certainly be challenged in the courts.
However, the death penalty and the current method (by the gas chamber) are the law. Until that changes, we should continue to utilize what 80% of California voters approve of and voted overwhelmingly to reinstate in 1977.
