Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, trying to smooth the transition of power at the top of the embattled Police Department, on Wednesday won promises of cooperation with the new police chief, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Willie L. Williams, from unsuccessful LAPD candidates for the job.
At a private, hourlong breakfast meeting at City Hall, Bradley commended five high-ranking LAPD commanders for participating in the long, controversial process of choosing Chief Daryl F. Gates’ successor, and urged them to close ranks behind the new chief, according to participants.
“Specifically, he ask for our continuing support in this time of change in leadership,” said Deputy Chief Matthew V. Hunt, who ranked third in the competition for the job. Hunt and others said the meeting was cordial, and all the commanders said they would assist Williams, the first outsider selected to head the department in more than 40 years.
