A Jolt for Cannes: Organizers of this year’s Cannes Film Festival said Thursday they expect to provoke outrage by showing as their opening film “Basic Instinct,” the controversial and graphic U.S. thriller that has been condemned by several groups representing homosexuals and feminists. “I know this film is provocative, but that’s the way we want it,” festival director Gilles Jacob told a news conference in Paris. “There’s nothing more boring than people just filing in to see film after film.” “Basic Instinct” will be the first of 21 movies showing in competition at the 45th annual festival next month.
