Testimony in Rodney King Case
During trial testimony when Los Angeles Police Department Officer Joseph Napolitano was on the witness stand, mention of a “crate net” was made in context with the arsenal of weapons available to the LAPD. Expert witness Sgt. Charles L. Duke Jr. testified that he had recommended to the LAPD that “leg grabbers” or a net be used when apprehending strong, violent suspects. He further stated that the use of these devices could subdue the suspect in about 30 to 40 seconds.
It is my fervent hope that the LAPD in particular and police departments in general learn from the experience of this historic case to implement the recommendation of Sgt. Duke when a situation such as the Rodney King case occurs in the future.
