United Way Names Acting President
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — United Way of America named a senior vice president, Alan S. Cooper, as its acting president Friday, one day after the resignation of William Aramony.
Aramony announced that he was stepping down after allegations of mismanagement and extravagance led to calls for his resignation from local units in several cities.
United Way of America said in a statement that Aramony’s resignation was effective Friday and that Cooper was taking over on a temporary basis.
Cooper, 61, was president of United Way of central Maryland, based in Baltimore, before becoming senior vice president for human resources.
As president of the national United Way, Aramony won credit during his tenure for his efforts to unify many different community chest groups into a national organization and for the high profile he attained for the charitable group.
But the stormy end to his career began this month after the Washington Post reported that he had used charitable donations to finance a free-spending lifestyle of limousine service, overseas trips on the Concorde and an expensive condominium on New York City’s fashionable Upper East Side.
