Katie ter Horst; WWII’s ‘Angel of Arnhem’
OOSTERBEEK, Netherlands — Katie ter Horst, the volunteer nurse known as the “Angel of Arnhem” to hundreds of wounded British soldiers in World War II, has died at the age of 85, police said.
She was hit by a car that swerved off the road as she walked near her home Friday night, said a police spokesman.
It was at that same house that Mrs. Ter Horst tended to hundreds of British soldiers during the Battle of Arnhem in September, 1944.
More than 1,300 Allied soldiers died in the battle.
Mrs. Ter Horst’s deeds were an integral part of the 1977 movie “A Bridge Too Far,” in which her character was played by Liv Ullman.
