German Trade Surplus Shrank in 1991: Germany plunged into its first current account trade deficit in 10 years in 1991, the government said, as unification ate up West Germany’s once-huge surplus and transfers of funds abroad soared. The Federal Statistics Office said unified Germany’s trade in goods and services last year produced a deficit of $21 billion, contrasted with a 1990 surplus of $47.7 billion. Germany’s traditional trade surplus with the United States, once a source of tension, swung into a deficit of $800 million.
