The record $18.1-million opening of Paramount’s “Wayne’s World” during the four-day Presidents’ Day holiday has overshadowed big news at another studio. Five movies from the Disney Co.’s distribution arm Buena Vista finished in the Top 10, a first for a single distributor. Last weekend’s reissue of “The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective,” “Medicine Man,” “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” “Father of the Bride” and “Beauty and the Beast” played on 7,878 screens, encompassing almost a third of the nation’s theaters, and grossed a total of $26.3 million. Buena Vista releases movie titles for Disney, Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures.
